World Mink Output Increases
WORLD MINK PRODUCTION REBOUNDED THIS YEAR following two years of decline that largely reflected cutbacks by China. The new crop, which will be marketed in the coming auction season, will amount to about 50,480,000 mink, an advance of 8.6% over that produced last year. The upswing largely reflects reported new efforts in China and an increase in the U.S., according to figures compiled by Finnish Fur Sales with cooperation by Kopenhagen Fur.
Chinese mink production was estimated at around 12 million. This compares with 9 million last year, which reflected two years of deep slashes. Production of mink in China had exploded from about 4 million pelts in 2002 to an estimated 18 million in 2007. But poor quality pelts attributed to inexperience in fur farming techniques resulted in disappointing prices and immediate losses, forcing many to quit almost as suddenly as they began.
Denmark, with its mink production unchanged at 14 million pelts, remains the world’s leading supplier.
