U.S. May imports of fur apparel rise sharply
IMPORTS OF FUR APPAREL INTO THE U.S. ROSE SHARPLY IN MAY, confirming earlier reports that Americans spent more at the international fairs this year.
According to the latest Commerce Dept. data, virtually all suppliers shipped in more than they did in last year’s month. The total was nearly 50% greater than a year ago but, since May is not among the major months for imports, percentages can be misleading.
Receipts from all sources amounted to $7.5 million, versus $5.1 million last year. This consisted of $3.8 million in mink garments, an increase of 42%, and $3.7 million in other furs, up 56%. This brought the five-month aggregate to $21.7 million, an increase of 17%. The total included $11.8 million in mink, up 12%, and $9.9 million other, an increase of 23%. The increases also reflected this year’s higher prices.
Hong Kong/China was the biggest supplier, accounting for nearly half the month’s total.
