U.S. Fur Retail Sales Still Suffering in Poor Economy

Fur Information Council of America releases latest statistics

Total US retail fur sales in 2009 declined about 7% from the previous year, according to the Fur Information Council of America (FICA).

Sales amounted to $1.26 billion, including furs, fur-trimmed garments, accessories and services.

But, notes FICA, the decline must be considered in the context of the continued economic downtrend which resulted in average sales declines ranging from 15% to 30% for luxury apparel, coats and jewelry. As fashion trends and consumer preferences have shifted to smaller fashion garments (versus the classic full-length coat), the organization points out, the decrease in average price per unit along with increases in store traffic suggest that unit sales volume remained strong.

Worldwide fur sales for the 2008-09 selling season, as reported by the International Fur Trade Federation, were $13 billion, slightly above the previous year despite the global recession.
