US Fur Retail Sales Rose 3.1% in 2010
RETAIL FUR SALES IN 2010 IN THE U.S. SHOWED AN INCREASE OF 3.1% OVER THE PREVIOUS YEAR, according to the Fur Information Council of America.
Based on the results of a survey in which retailers were asked how much their gross sales increased or decreased from the previous year, FICA determined the fur business in the U.S. amounted to $1.3 billion last year. That consisted of fur items and services, the items including fur apparel, shearlings, accessories and any other product containing some amount of real fur.
“Customers this year,” said FICA chairman Andre Ferber, “seemed to be looking for shorter, more fashion-oriented pieces.” The president of Jacques Ferber Furs, Philadelphia, noted “we saw customers buying several pieces and we saw a greater range of customers coming through our doors. Of course, this meant higher unit sales volume.”
According to the survey, mink remains the most popular fur representing about 70% of all fur sold at retail.
