US Fur Imports Show New $ Rise
FUR APPAREL IMPORTS INTO THE U.S. CONTINUED THEIR UPWARD TREND in September, as retailers replenished their inventories following a good season.
But the percentage increase in the dollar value was roughly equal to the average price increases at the wholesale level this year, suggesting that the number of units was about the same. Also, the increase was entirely in non-mink items, while mink imports actually declined.
Significantly, most of the wild furs, which traditionally were furnished by Canada, are now coming from Hong Kong/China. The swing to non-minks may be taken as a sign of how retailers are dealing with this year’s higher price structure.
Imports from all sources in September rose 22% to a total of $21.2 million. The mink portion was down 10% at $8.6 million, while other furs jumped 61% to $12.6 million. This brought the nine-month aggregate to $82.1 million, a gain of 27% over the same period last year.
