U.S. fur imports decline again
IMPORTS OF FUR APPAREL INTO THE U.S. dropped sharply in August, continuing the steady decline since early last year. According to the latest Commerce Dept. data, imports from all sources amounted to $11.4 million, down 27% from the same month a year ago. This consisted of $5.5 million in mink, which was off only 5.5%, but $5.9 million in other furs, which represented a drop of 40%. For the first eight months of the year, fur imports were down 30% at $47.4 million. The mink portion was off 26% at $23.7 million, while other furs declined 35% to $23.7 million.
Shipments from Hong Kong/China, the main supplier, declined 22% in August to a total of $5.2 million. This included $2.8 million in mink, down 25%, and $2.5 million in other furs, off 17%. The year-to-date aggregate was down 36% at $19.5 million and consisting of $12.3 million in mink, down 43%, and $7.2 million other, down 18%.
