US fur imports continue to rise
IMPORTS OF FUR APPAREL INTO THE U.S. continued to rise in July for the seventh consecutive month of increases, following more than two years of almost solid monthly declines. Under the current economic conditions, however, the steady uptrend is not regarded so much as an indication of optimism for the season ahead as it is a need to replenish inventories after a long period of conservative filling-in as needed. Also, considering the substantial hike in prices this year, while the import figures may be up in value, the units (not available for comparable items) may show little change.
The latest Commerce Dept. report shows July imports from all sources amounted to $11.3 million, an increase of 14% over last year’s month. This consisted of $4.7 million in mink apparel, up 10%, and $6.6 million in other furs, up 17%. This brought the seven-month total to $44.6 million, an increase of 24% over last year’s period.
