U.S. fur apparel imports up again in June
U.S. IMPORTS OF FUR APPAREL SURGED AHEAD AGAIN IN JUNE on the heels of a sharp rise the previous month, further indication that the trade was restocking after a decent retail season.
According to the latest Commerce Dept. data, June imports from all sources jumped 56% to a total of $11.6 million. This consisted of $6 million in mink garments, an increase of 76%, and $5.6 million in other furs, up 39%.
This brought the year’s total for the first six months to $33.3 million, an increase of 28% over last year at this time. The breakdown showed that mink accounted for 27% of that at $17.8 million and other furs 29% at $12 million.
Virtually all of that increase came from Hong Kong/China, the country’s largest supplier. June imports from that source soared to $6.9 million, or 151% over last year’s month.
