US fur apparel imports edge up in January
IMPORTS OF FUR APPAREL INTO THE U.S. edged up slightly in January, following the big upturn in December. The increases in both months were believed to reflect retailers’ immediate needs as a result of strong weather-related sales. Based on the past season’s largely satisfactory results – and clean inventories – indications are that the months ahead should also bring gains as retailers replenish their stocks. According to the latest Commerce Dept. data, January imports from all sources amounted to $4.9 million, a gain of 2% over last year’s month. This consisted of $2.7 million in mink, down 8%, and $2.2 million in other furs, up 17%.
Shipments from Hong Kong/China rose 60% to just over $2 million for the month. Mink constituted the bulk of those shipments at $1.6 million, an increase of 63%, while other furs rose 51% to $467,000. Imports from Canada amounted to $1.3 million, a gain of 5%.
