LETTER TO THE WASHINGTON TIMES, DEC. 16, 1998
The Violence of Animal-Rights Terror Groups Needs More Monitoring
In reference to your report on threats against the American Farm Bureau by so-called animal rights and ecoterrorist groups, those incidents, sadly, are just dots on a landscape of growing violence and terrorism directed at animal and resource-based enterprises (“Ecoterrorists send warnings to save Yellowstone wolves,” Nov. 27).
It clearly is time to recognize animal rights zealots for what they are – a modern-day mob. The criminals who threw acid into dry-cleaning shops in Al Capone’s day were pikers compared with those who routinely lob firebombs, issue death threats and annually wreak millions of dollars in property destruction.
Of course, the animal charities that reap fortuitous gain from criminal activity deny all connection to terrorists when their media campaigns are punctuated by violence. Capone stayed distant enough from criminal activity to be sentenced only for tax evasion.
When one reviews the instances of such violence, they appear just a little too well-coordinated to go unquestioned by state and federal law enforcement agencies. That is why the National Animal Interest Alliance, a broadly based national welfare organization that believes animal rights promoters go too far, is asking for congressional hearings to authorize and direct appropriate federal agencies to investigate these groups. Connecting the dots in this gruesome picture is long overdue.
