Supplies of Mink Pelts Tight
AT THE SKIN LEVEL, DEALERS REPORT A STEADY STREAM OF INQUIRIES FOR BOTH MINK AND WILD FURS, mainly from accounts in China, Korea and Greece, the latter believed to fill Russian orders. Supplies, they say, are either tight or non-existent.
The scarcity of mink is expected to be relieved somewhat with the arrival of fresh pelts from ranches that administer melatonin to some of their animals, which speeds up the furring process by about a month. The quantities are limited, because it is estimated that only about 10% to 15% of North American mink are treated with the drug.
It is also said to enhance the size of new females, but at the cost of reducing the size of the litters those females may subsequently produce. These mink are said to be bringing prices comparable to, or stronger than, those paid at the September auctions, indicating a strong opening for the new season in December.
