FCUSA PRESS RELEASE, SEPTEMBER 19, 1999
Solid Achievements at FCUSA Annual Meeting
In spite of distractions, such as wonderful weather and protests outside the hotel, the current crop of Fur Commission USA volunteers focused on the work at hand and accomplished a lot during the 1999 Annual Meeting in San Diego, Sept. 17-18.
“The atmosphere was the best I have witnessed in many years of attending meetings,” said lawyer Larry Lasoff, who advised the group on general legislative and trade issues. Others also remarked on the “roll up the sleeves and get down to business” attitude.
With our thanks for their selfless volunteer work, outgoing officers returned to the ranks of boardmembers and Gincy Beck took her well-earned place as President.
Financials were reviewed and FCUSA is on budget and making progress in working more efficiently. Computers, a website and updated software are all contributing to this. “No one hates the steep learning curves of new technology more than me,” stated Executive Director Teresa Platt, “but that’s how we make our funds go as far as possible.”
Each committee made presentations on past progress and plans for next year.
The Animal Welfare Committee (AWC) is working hard on updating the Certification Guidelines. Their ongoing educational projects are varied and reaping benefits. Over the last year, the AWC has financed the transfer of educational materials to our website, conquered cybercasting and overseen the writing of a mountain of new information for the public. The Government Affairs Committee reported on how they shared expenses with other segments of the fur trade to reduce costs while successfully battling the ill-conceived Beverly Hills initiative. The Research Committee shared progress on research under way around the world. Discussion focused on the demands facing veterinarians and nutritionists involved in the complex world of raising domesticated carnivores such as mink and fox.
Over the two days, priorities were set and budgets forged for next year. While the committees and board worked, family members toured Old Town, Sea World and the beach, or ventured across the border to the bawdy town of Tijuana, Mexico. But the whole team came together at chow time to reminisce over a work-filled 1999 and toast a fabulous 2000!
