EU Seal Issue Still Smoldering
THE SEAL ISSUE IN EUROPE IS STILL SMOLDERING despite the EU’s ban on trade in seal products two years ago.
The latest action was Norway’s submission of the issue to the World Trade Organization, requesting the establishment of a dispute settlement panel, thus joining Canada which submitted a similar request in February. A settlement panel could take a year or more to deal with the case.
In the meantime, the ban became effective Aug. 20, 2010, and halts all exports of seal products from Canada and Norway to EU member countries.
For Norwegian authorities, said Fisheries and Coastal Affairs Minister Lisbeth Berg-Hansen, “this issue involves important principles, such as our right to sustainably harvest our living marine resources and to sell products derived from hunting and fishing.”
Like Canada, Norway considers the EU’s ban to be groundless, that seal stocks are not threatened and hunting is subject to strict control.
