Fur Retailers Viewing Strong Finish
CONTINUED COLD WEATHER AROUND THE GLOBE – AND FORECASTS OF MORE TO COME – are keeping fur retailers busy.
February is traditionally a clearance month when stores try to clear out as much of their inventory to make room for fresh merchandise for the next season. Reports from the Far East and Russia are that retail activity is still strong. Although the Chinese New Year celebrations – which include lengthy visits to distant families – may have put a temporary dent in retail traffic, holiday-related buying before the event was described as excellent. And this being the Year of the Rabbit, sales of those furs received an additional boost.
A spot check of American retailers indicates that the momentum built up in December and January is carrying through. Their inventories are down, but they are not filling in holes as they might have done earlier in the season. Instead, they are modifying items from stock to meet customers’ specifications.
