Price gap narrowing between North American, European mink

THE PREMIUMS THAT NORTH AMERICAN MINK FARMERS TRADITIONALLY HAVE ENJOYED over prices paid for pelts produced in Europe are continuing to narrow.

While they still exist in connection with classic European mink, increasing Danish and Finnish production of short-napped types, called ‘velvet’, are steadily bridging the gap.

At the most recent sale at Kopenhagen Furs, the offering of velvet types accounted for almost half the collection and brought premiums of as much as 10% to 15% over the classic pelts. With the exception of black males, averages brought by the velvets in the other major colors were very close to those at the March sale at North American Fur Auctions.

The Americans still got about $10 more for their black males, but the Danish mahoganies averaged a few percentages higher than the American goods. The averages may not be directly comparable because of variations in sizes and other considerations.
