PeTA Bullies Babies, Little Boys
PeTA Bullies Babies, Little Boys
June, 1997
Last year, animal rights activists attacked the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and spent months bullying terminally ill children. This year, they’ve picked two even more pathetic targets.
In an April 21 news release, PeTA blasted the March of Dimes, which funds research into birth defects. Dubbing the charity “the March of Crimes,” PeTA protesters gathered outside the March of Dimes headquarters in White Plains, New Jersey, under banners reading “Stop Torturing Animals.” No response yet from the March of Dimes organization, or from the millions of mothers who rely on the organization for help understanding and dealing with the heartbreaking reality of birth defects.
On April 22, Boys Town facilities in California received a telephone bomb threat from an animal rights activist who mentioned PeTA and warned, “What if I told you I was going to blow the place up.” Boys Town operates an emergency shelter in Long Beach, and a research hospital in Orange County. The hospital has been accused by PeTA of “torture” of research animals. Boys Towns officials said animal rights supporters have staged screaming protests at Boys Town facilities, phoned employees at work and home, and threatened researchers and employees by mail and telephone.
Boys Town Vice President Tom Gregory said of the incidents, “To quote a recent statement from the Catholic League for Religious Civil Rights, ‘Just what the bigots at PeTA will do for an encore is anyone’s guess.’”
