NY Fashion Week has more furs than ever

RUNWAY REPORT: The recent New York Fashion Week featured more furs by more fur and ready-to-wear designers than ever before, strong testimony to fur’s continuing importance as a material of fashion. Not only were there more furs in the collections, but in more substantial garments as opposed to the trimmings and accessories that flavored the ready-to-wear collections in previous years. Moreover, Mother Nature provided the snowy winter backdrop for the week’s showings in Bryant Park, which found the editors, buyers and fashionistas appropriately dressed in furs.

RECOGNITION: Although the European Union has taken an anti-fur stance having banned commerce in seal products in its 16 member countries, the European Commission has recognized the Origin Assured label promulgated by the fur trade. In a recent posting on the International Fur Trade Federation’s blog, it was mentioned that the EC is working on different initiatives, including one involving “origin marking”, a mandatory scheme for imports of apparel from other countries.
