FUR COMMISSION USA PRESS RELEASE, OCTOBER 7, 2009
R.I.P. Simon Reiss (1923-2009) Simon Reiss, 86, long a leader of the British and international fur trade, passed away Oct. 5 after a brief illness. After coming to England from Germany as a 15-year-old refugee in 1938, Reiss embarked on what would be a long and distinguished career in the fur trade. In his student years, he worked part-time for a London skin merchant. He then established his own sheepskin business before joining GR Holdings, where he spent most of his career. Reiss held many high offices in the fur trade. He was chairman of the British Fur Trade Association and chairman and life vice-president of the Fur Trade Benevolent Society. In 1971 he became involved with the International Fur Trade Federation, going on to serve as treasurer, a position he held for 20 years. He later became honorary president of IFTF, a position he filled until 2005. Outside the fur business, Reiss was an active fundraiser for the State of Israel, and deeply involved in Israel's Holocaust Museum and the Holocaust Educational Trust (in the UK). A devoted husband to Trude, who sadly passed away last year, he is survived by his twin sister, daughter and grandchildren.
