![]() FUR COMMISSION USA PRESS RELEASE, AUGUST 14, 2007
Update from the Carmel Family in Hinsdale, Massachusetts (See: Mink farm attacked by suspected extremists, hundreds of mink still missing, Aug. 13, 2007.) As of 4:00 p.m., the Carmel mink farming family reports that there are still at least a hundred mink unaccounted for after the farm was broken into and fencing cut early Monday morning. Since farm-raised mink confuse the sound of traffic with the sound of feed carts, at least ten mink were killed on a nearby road. Several hundred animals were collected from around the farm, and from neighbors' yards. These mink were quickly settled back into their pens and fed and watered as they were extremely hungry. Anyone finding a lost mink can call Teresa Platt at the mink farmers' trade association, Fur Commission USA, at 619-575-0139 and a pick-up will be arranged. People should be cautious since mink have sharp teeth and will bite if frightened. "The neighbors, community and police have been marvelous," stated owner Jeanne Carmel, who runs the farm with her husband Earl and grandson Daniel. "We’ve received many calls of support and have been running around collecting our animals. We send our thanks to everyone." The Carmels have been raising mink for 55 years, and the farm is worked daily by a third generation of Carmels. Police are investigating the crime, in conjunction with the FBI which also has jurisdiction since sabotage attacks on livestock operations are violations of the federal Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA). The AETA was strengthened in November 2006 with support from agriculture, property rights groups and research facilities around the country. Anyone with information on the crime should contact the Hinsdale Police Department at 413-655-0201. Officer Ben Pigott is the case officer.
