FUR COUNCIL OF CANADA PRESS RELEASE, MAY 16, 2005
Maurice Memorial Award for 2005 Alcide Giroux, former president of the Ontario Trappers Federation, was honoured at the Montreal NAFFEM, May 8, as the 2005 recepient of the Fur Council of Canada's Maurice Memorial Award. In presenting Giroux with his award, in the presence of six hundred industry leaders attending the NAFFEM Gala Fashion Evening, Fur Council president Paula Lishman said: "This Metis trapper from Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, is a wonderful spokesperson for our trade and an extraordinary human being. As President of the Ontario Trappers Association, Alcide played a vital role in making Canada a world leader in humane-trap research and trapper education." A member of the original Federal/Provincial Committee on Humane Trapping, in the late 1970s, Alcide Giroux was a founding member of the Fur Institute of Canada, the organization set up in 1983 to continue this important work. He has been a director of the Fur Institute for 22 years, and serves as chair of the Institute's Aboriginal Communications Committee, and a member of its Trap Research and Communications committees. "Alcide has taken countless journalists and others out on the land to explain the realities of modern trapping. His leadership in promoting humane trapping standards and trapper education programs allows everyone in the fur trade to hold their heads high," said FCC executive vice-president Alan Herscovici. The Maurice Memorial award was established in 1957 to recognize fur leaders and allies who have made "outstanding contributions to the betterment of the fur trade." Previous winners have included Retail Fur Council of Canada founding president Jordan Livingston, former Fur Council (and Hudson's Bay Fur Auctions) president Leonard Werner and Vogue magazine editor Anna Wintour. Last year's winner was International Fur Trade Federation chairman Andreas Lenhart.
