More Mink Skins Are Being Produced

COPENHAGEN: The world production of mink skins has increased slightly this year over last year. Figures collected by Kopenhagen Fur estimates the world production to reach just over 35 million mink skins in 2004. Denmark is by far the world's largest mink producing country. The production has been steady the last couple of years, but this year Danish fur farmers have increased the production by 400.000 mink skins reaching a total production of 12.6 million mink skins.

In the other Nordic countries (Finland, Norway, Iceland and Sweden) the number of mink skins being produced has decreased slightly. However, the Nordic production as a whole reaches 16.1 million mink skins compared to 16.055 million last year because of the increased Danish production. Finland produces 1.7 million, Norway 300,000, Iceland 150,000 and Sweden 1.35 million mink skins.

In Holland, the world's third largest mink producing country, the production has increased from 3.1 million mink skins in 2003 to 3.25 million in 2004. Polish fur farmers have increased their production from 1.2 to 1.5 million mink skins. In Russia and the Baltic countries the mink production is steady at 3.5 million skins.

In both the USA and Canada the number of produced mink skins has risen by 100,000. In 2003 American farmers produced 2.5 million mink skins and this year the number is 2.6 millions. In Canada the number of produced mink skins has gone from 1.7 to 1.8 million.

In recent years, China's mink production has been on the increase. This is also the case this year with a production of 5 million mink skins compared to 4 million mink skins in 2003. China is the world's second largest producer of mink skins.
