One Fifth of Finnish Fur Breeders Plan to Increase Production

HELSINKI: According to a survey made on behalf of the Finnish Fur Breeders' Association, Finnish Fur Sales and Suomen Rehu Oy, one fifth of those interviewed are going to increase their production before year 2010. One fifth are going to quit. The main reason for quitting was the breeders' own age and therefore a problem to find a continuator.

The telephone survey reached almost 1,000 entrepreneurs, which is even two thirds of the Finnish fur entrepreneurs. The conducted survey was the first survey that investigated Finnish fur breeders' plans for the future.

Year 2010 is significant, because from the beginning of 2011 the required cage size will increase and therefore the need for investment is considerable.

According to Finnish Fur Sales almost half of those interviewed have already started the renewing of the cages but only a small amount have finished it. A fifth of those who are increasing their production are planning to build a mink hall.

Of the 800 fur breeders' who are keeping their production unchanged, four out of five say that the restricted legislation is preventing the extension.
