Hartsough Endowed Scholarship for Stephanie Pastva
The winner of the G.R. Hartsough Endowed Scholarship for 2003 is Stephanie Pastva, a doctoral student in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Michigan State University. Her research deals with the effects of environmental contaminants in the Kalamazoo River on wild mink, and the results may have some spin-off value to the ranch mink industry. Michigan State is a leading institution on investigations of environmental contamination.
Pastva grew up in Buffalo, New York, and graduated from the University of Maine in 1997 with a B.S. degree in Wildlife Ecology. She proceeded to Michigan State where she received an M.S. degree in wildlife toxicology and immediately continued into a Ph.D. program. Her project involves running a trapline in the Kalamazoo valley, as well as working with local trappers. The data collected from this research will be useful in making decisions to shape the future of the Kalamazoo River Superfund site as well as of other PCB-contaminated river areas. After completing the doctoral requirements, Pastva plans to work for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a contaminants biologist.
The Hartsough Endowed Scholarship was established in memory of Dr. G.R. Hartsough, who for years served as secretary for the Mink Farmers Research Foundation and provided ranch services to mink farmers. It is awarded annually to a graduate student at his alma mater, Michigan State University, to support research with mink.
