Dutch Shelve Fur Farm Ban Plan
THE DUTCH government has repealed a plan to ban the breeding of animals for fur, but with elections on the horizon, the measure may yet be revived.
On Oct. 9, Agriculture Minister Kees Veerman announced that the plan enacted by the previous government to ban fur farming was being scrapped pending new legislation expected from the European Union on the welfare of farmed mink. The ban was to have been introduced progressively over 10 years.
However, a week after the announcement the coalition government collapsed, and an election has been scheduled for January
The Netherlands is the world's second-largest mink producer after Denmark, producing about 3 million pelts annually.
