FUR COMMISSION USA PRESS RELEASE, OCTOBER 29, 2002

Vote NO on Florida Amendment 10: Piggy PAC

(Update: Florida's Pigs Get Wings By David Martosko, Director of Research, Center for Consumer Freedom, Nov. 16, 2002)

Money from Political Action Committees (PACs) for animal rights initiatives has flooded into state elections over the last few years. This year, a very interesting initiative has surfaced in Florida.

Floridians should vote NO on Amendment 10 (sponsored by Piggy PAC "Floridians for Humane Farms"), a measure designed to infuse animal rights into the State Constitution.

"So why invest the nearly $1 million supporters of the initiative claim they will spend in the coming campaign?" asked Wesley Smith in Florida's Weekly Standard as he deduced, "That's a lot of money to potentially help just a few hundred pigs. But if the goal is to blur the moral distinction between human and animal life - well, that, for animal rightists, is worth much more than $1 million."(1)

Although the care of pigs is worthy of debate, we object to animal husbandry issues being introduced into constitutions designed to safeguard civil rights for humans.(2) Pigs are not people and, most of the time, people are not pigs.
