Fur Retail Sales Remain Strong in Unstable Economy

Without a doubt, fur is back and in full fashion. Declared as the "must have" fabric on the fashion runways of New York, Paris and Milan, retail sales for fur and fur-trimmed apparel / accessories remain strong in an unstable economy.

"In spite of the events of 9/11, a weak economy and the warmest winter on record, fur sales continued at a strong pace proving that it is an essential element in a woman's wardrobe," explained Keith Kaplan, Executive Director of the Fur Information Council of America. "In 1985, only 42 fashion designers were using fur in their ready-to-wear collections. Today, there are more than 300 renowned fashion designers showing fur fashions, coats and fur-trimmed merchandise."

As reported by Southwick Associates, fur sales figures were the second best in the past decade, with 67% of fur retailers and specialty boutiques reporting sales increases this past season. Categories such as fur-trimmed coats, jackets and accessories showed significant growth, with shearling sales soaring.

For 2001, US retailers have reported fur sales of $1.53 billion compared to ten years ago when the market reported $1.0 billion in sales. New York remains the number one city in terms of fur sales. The Fur Information Council of America also reports that one in five women in the US own a fur coat.
