Lots of "Skin" on "Sex and the City"

By Teresa Platt, Executive Director, FCUSA

Many new shows, in an effort to reflect the real world, are showing lots of skin and fur. "Popular," "Jack and Jill," "Will and Grace" and "Sex and the City" are examples of shows that show plenty of both.

For fans of Sunday night's Sex and the City, the Home Box Office (HBO) series launched in May with a lot of furry additions to the theme of bared skin.

Reality check: Sex and the City is set in New York City. New York can be very cold and New York ladies wear fur. The premiere episode had the four lead characters on the Staten Island Ferry at night. I've been on a New York ferry - it's freezing out there. The stars without fur were shivering, the ones in fur were warm as toast. Point made.

Falling in love ... AGAIN!

In another scene, the lead character goes shopping in a funky fake fur. Later, she kisses a handsome politician in a coat room filled with, you guessed it, real fur coats! Mink, fox, beaver, chinchilla and more - all there, in a variety of colors. As the couple falls against the soft coats, the producers succeeded in creating a very sexy scene - about as close as one can get, in modern society, to a cave full of pelts!

As you can imagine, all this "skin" has gotten some people very excited. Some are excited and FURious!

As one animal rights newsgroupie commented, "The episode itself lived up to my expectations - it was witty, sometimes shocking and several times hilarious. But all that was overshadowed by the overwhelming presence of fur. I haven't seen so many fur coats since the last ad for the Fur Council. This show, in which hip fashion is a supporting character, seemed to be blatantly promoting fur."

Well, that newsgroupie may be upset, but the people of the fur trade are happy to see fur worn and shown as it should be - as simply a great choice for a chilly day or evening!

NOTES:

You can learn more about Sex and the City at www.hbo.com/city/flash_intro.html. Furs for the Sex in the City ferry scene were provided by J. Mendel, New York, New York, and furs used in the closet scene were provided by Winter Fur Shopp, Red Bank, New Jersey. The furry scenes on Sex and the City and many other shows were coordinated through the services of Keith Kaplan of the Los Angeles-based Kaplan Group.
