Norwegian Court Rules in Favor of Fur Farming

A NORWEGIAN HIGH COURT has upheld a local court ruling that fur farming is in compliance with the country's animal protection law, according to the International Fur Trade Federation.

In 1998, the Norwegian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) sued two arbitrarily chosen fur farmers with the aim of demonstrating that fur farming was illegal under Norwegian law protecting animals. On Dec. 24, 1998, the local court in Eidsvoll, where the case was being tried, found against the NSPCA.

The NSPCA then appealed to the High Court, and the case was retried from Nov. 1-4, 1999.

After hearing evidence from competent authorities and scientists, on Dec. 15 the High Court passed judgement upholding the decision of the local court.
