EUROPEAN FUR BREEDERS' ASSOCIATION PRESS STATEMENT, MAY 14, 1999
UK's Fur Farming (Prohibition) Bill "Fundamentally Wrong" : EFBA The European Fur Breeders' Association (EFBA), which represents 8,000 farmers throughout Europe, is solidly opposed to Labour MP Maria Eagle's Bill to ban fur farming in UK and is firmly behind the British Fur Trade Association's continued opposition to it. "It is regrettable, though perhaps understandable given the history of continuous attacks by animal rights activists, that the British Fur Breeders Association now appears to have agreed to accept promises of substantial compensation from the British Government and to support the proposed ban on fur farming in that country," said an EFBA statement today. It continued: "However, it is not an approach that can be supported by the European Fur Breeders Association, which is concerned for all farmers in 14 other countries. This is particularly so when, as the British mink farmers note, the intended ban flies in the face of sound scientific evidence of good and improving animal welfare on fur farms." EFBA added that "the Bill is fundamentally wrong in principle and in its fact, when it has been scientifically proven that mink are fully domesticated farm animals and enjoy amongst the best in farmed animal welfare standards. Fur farming as portrayed by Ms Eagle and her supporters simply bears no resemblance to reality. "We consider it without precedent that in a democratic society, emotional prejudice and misinformation can be used as the basis for bringing about the end of such a successful and economically viable farming sector."
