FUR COMMISSION USA PRESS RELEASE, AUGUST 13, 1998

And Cres Vellucci and JP Goodwin Need Hat Stands

By Teresa Platt, Executive Director, FCUSA

DALLAS, TEXAS: A Dallas jury gave JP Goodwin and Lydia Nichols of Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade (CAFT) fines of $2,000 each for interfering with a police officer while he was making an arrest. The two received seven days and three days in jail, respectively.

Goodwin and Nichols are also suing Neiman Marcus for injuries supposedly incurred during a September 1997 protest altercation.

Besides CAFT, Goodwin has worn the hats of the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) and No Compromise (Southern Bureau) [which makes it sound much more distinguished - editor] and is now a conference organizer.

Crescenzo Vellucci, an animal rights ambulance chaser, issued a statement on behalf of Goodwin. Vellucci, who works closely with animal rights attorney Larry Weiss, identified himself as "the director of Activist Civil Liberties Committee, a civil liberties firm monitoring the case." You may remember Cres as the No Compromise editor, National Activist Network director, ALF spokesperson, and for his involvement in a large University of California at Irvine protest which resulted in numerous arrests, including his own.

JP Goodwin is busy organizing the first ever "Anti-fur Organizers Conference" to be held September 19 in Dallas, Texas. [I'm sure it's just a coincidence that FCUSA will be holding its annual meeting at the same time - editor.] Sponsored by CAFT and Animal Liberation of Texas, the gathering will include the traditional Neiman Marcus protest on Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by:

"EXCITING WORKSHOPS ON:

    • Developing Cost Efficient Ad Campaigns
    • Organizing for Fall Elections
    • International Campaigns
    • Updates on National Campaigns
    • Developing a Final Strategy
    • Filing Lawsuits
    • Fur Farming/Trapping Overview."

According to Goodwin, the conference will "help organizers develop the most effective strategies possible for the 1998-99 Winter fur season. Come early for the Thursday night social function. While this is an action-oriented conference, one major goal is to facilitate cooperation among grassroots animal rights activists."

And remember, ends the announcement, "RSVP REQUIRED." Black tie, JP?

Considering all the hats these people wear, should we donate some hat stands? The first ones should go to Cres Vellucci and JP Goodwin.
