ALF/ELF Take Credit for Joint Crime Against Research Facility

July 6, 1998, Coronado, CA

The Middleton, Wisconsin-based United Vaccines Research Facility, which develops and markets vaccines for domesticated mink, was raided by animal rightists over the weekend. The crime was discovered about 1 a.m. on Saturday, July 4th. About 150 mink and ferrets were released, most were recaptured but a dozen of the animals perished on a nearby road. One ferret is still missing and it is speculated that the activists may have taken it with them.

The animals held at the research facility had ear tags which will help the researchers restore order, but some animals will no longer be suitable for completion of studies.

Animal Liberation Front and Earth Liberation Front jointly took credit for the crime (see http://host.envirolink.org/ALFIS/news/980703c1.html.). "INDEPENDENCE DAY FOR FUR FARM PRISONERS" graffiti was spray-painted on a wall, and equipment and windows were smashed.

Damages are easily over $10,000 and the FBI has been notified. Animal cruelty charges may also be lodged against the perpetrators.

Although the research facility had not experienced any prior animal rights activity, the nearby University of Wisconsin - Madison primate center has been subjected to numerous incidents.

The ALF/ELF press release states that:

"This action commemorates the worldwide struggle for independence from occupation and freedom from domination and is dedicated to Josh Ellerman for his dedication to defend Mother Earth and her animal nations. Returning the prisoners back home, the Fur War continues."

Douglas Joshua Ellerman jumped bail in May, to avoid sentencing at a Federal Court on explosive and arson charges related to the March 1997 $1 million firebombing at the Salt Lake Fur Breeders Agricultural Coop. He turned himself in to the Federal Marshal on June 29 and is now also being held at the Salt Lake County Jail.
