Canada reiterates support for seal hunt

The Fur Institute of Canada last week reiterated its support for sustainable seal hunting in Canada. The organization, which represents seal hunters, aboriginals and marine mammal scientists through its Seals and Sealing Network (SSN), said it will continue to oppose efforts to ban the hunting of seals. No date has been confirmed yet for this year's hunt.

Although the Gulf of St. Lawrence hunt has tentatively been set to start April 5 and on the Front off Labrador April 12, the lack of ice and other factors mean the dates will change. The Canadian government is working with industry to determine the timing, locations and size of this year's hunt. However, given the lack of ice, the harvest is expected to be low and the season short.

As previously reported, the European Union has banned the seal trade in its member countries and Canada has filed a protest with the World Trade Organization.
