Milwaukee Hosts International Mink Show
CELEBRATING “52 Years of Pride and Excellence”, hundreds of mink farmers converged on Milwaukee, Wisconsin this January 8 for the 52nd International Mink Show.
The three-day event was held against a backdrop of snow flurries and temperatures hovering at or below zero, a graphic illustration of the need for warm winter clothing, including beautiful fur garments.
The Mink Show is organized by mink farmers’ associations and includes displays of farm equipment, seminars on topics as varied as feed and global markets, judging competitions and general networking.
Teresa Platt of FCUSA was busy in Milwaukee meeting farmers from across the U.S. and Canada. Chairman Ron Gengel and the volunteers of the organizing committee deserve a round of applause for a job well done. The event was well attended and enjoyed by all.
On the downside, some 40 animal rightists held a sign-waving protest outside and about a dozen donned ski masks and attempted to charge the convention hall. They were turned away by the local police and hotel security. Leading them was a core of out-of-staters, including such familiar faces as J.P. Goodwin of the Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade (CAFT), and Gary Yourofsky, who is facing charges this March relating to a 1997 raid on a mink farm in Ontario.
Local support for the activists was minimal, however. As the Milwaukee Sentinel Journal commented, “Convincing Wisconsin residents that warm-weather gear is a bad thing in January is nearly the equivalent of protesting short-sleeved shirts on the Fourth of July.” Wisconsin also happens to be America’s leading fur-producing state.
