Leading Canadian fur retailer acquires competitor
AT A TIME WHEN OTHER BUSINESSES ARE RETRENCHING, a leading Canadian fur retailer has seized on a cross-border opportunity to acquire a venerable competitor. Lazare’s of Windsor, Ont., has purchased Kay Anos Furs of Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich., for an undisclosed sum.
Although separated by national borders, the two locations are less than an hour’s drive apart, both catering to separate upscale clienteles.
Lazare’s owner Paul Twigg acquired the store from the estate of Armen Anusbigian, whose father founded it 86 years ago and whose family has been running it ever since. The even older Lazare’s, established in 1914, also has an operation in Southfield, Mich., and will put its own name on the new acquisition next year. It will be under the personal supervision of Twigg, whose wife, Sharon, will manage the Windsor store.
