Kopenhagen Fur’s finale seen strong
INTERNATIONAL DEALERS AND BROKERS HEADING FOR KOPENHAGEN FUR’S final mink sale of the season were expecting keen competition at prices possibly stronger than June levels. The sale, which was getting under way after we went to press, was reported to be attracting an estimated attendance of as many as 600, which would be a record for a September auction. Especially in view of the fact that this is a typical year-end collection consisting in large part of breeders and low-grades.
Early reports from the scene indicated that China again is likely to dominate the bidding, the contingent from that country shaping up as by far the largest. According to veteran observers, there also appeared to be many more new faces among the Chinese crowd, evidence that the rapidly-growing market there was fostering further expansion at the trade level, including an infusion of young people who see promising career opportunities in the fur industry. That the venerable fur trade is attracting ‘new blood’ is a welcome sight to the veterans who have been seeing nothing but shrinkage in recent years. While the westerners may prefer to see expansion in their own home markets, they view the other markets’ growth as perpetuating their profession.
DELAWARE HAS PASSED A NEW STATE FUR LABELING LAW requiring all garments containing animal fur, regardless of price, to be labeled as such. The new law, which goes into effect June 1, 2010, is similar to that enacted by New York State last year. Second-hand items are excluded. Violators face a $200 fine per incident. The New York law was described by the Fur Information Council of America as so ambiguous that it advised retailers to take an extraordinary but simple action. FICA recommended an adhesive label reading “real fur” be affixed to hangtags or labels on all merchandise containing fur to ensure compliance.
