January Fur Sales Holding Up Well
AMERICAN RETAILERS HAVE BEEN COMING UP WITH MIXED REPORTS FOR JANUARY: most saying they’re running ahead of last year’s month, but some just meeting those figures.
There appears to be a consensus that, considering the sustained favorable temperatures, business should have been even better. From a fashion standpoint, the popularity of furs has been widely broadcast through media photos depicting how the public has been dealing with the weather. Economic conditions, however, were still cited as holding back some consumers.
But many retailers are also looking at another bright side of this season’s harsh weather conditions, namely the increased service business they can look forward to. Increased wearing of their furs usually increases their need for special care, not only cleaning but also repairs. This aspect of their business not only keeps them busy in the normally quiet spring and summer months, but also accounts for as much as 30% or 35% of their annual revenue.
