Is Wicklund Wising Up?
Is Wicklund Wising Up?
January, 1998
Freeman Wicklund, the Twin Cities animal rights leader who has often acted as spokesperson for CAFT and the ALF, has formed a new group that is “severing ties” with the Animal Liberation Front because of the ALF’s penchant for violence.
According to a report in the January 20 St. Paul Pioneer Press, Wicklund has announced the formation of the Animal Liberation League, which he claims will pursue animal rights goals through peaceful means. ALF’s tactics, according to Wicklund, “have been distracting the public from understanding our message … a lot of people can’t get past the acts of sabotage to understand the cruelty and violence inflicted on animals, which we are trying to prevent.”
There is speculation that Wicklund’s very public renunciation of ALF tactics may be an effort to lower his profile with law enforcement authorities, who have long suspected his involvement in numerous incidents of animal rights violence in the Twin Cities area. It remains to be seen whether the frequency of these incidents abates, now that Wicklund has supposedly renounced violence.
