CRIMINALS’ CORNER
Hearings in DC, Letterbombs in the UK
July 1, 1998, Coronado, CA
ON JUNE 9, WHILE THE U.S. Congress was holding hearings on eco-terror in Washington, D.C., four people associated with animal research received bombs in the mail in England. Colin Blakemore, head of physiology at Oxford University, and Chris Brown, owner of Hillgrove Farm, which breeds cats for research, as well as two employees of the farm, escaped injury. They recognized the packages as suspicious and called police.
The devices, which were made from greeting cards, contained batteries, wiring, modified flashlight bulbs filled with black powder explosive and a home-made device to complete the circuit when the card was opened.
Prof. Blakemore has long been a focus of animal extremists for his defense of animal research in medicine. Hillgrove Farm has been the scene of several violent protests by activists in recent months. Police are urging all involved in animal enterprises to maintain their vigilance about suspicious packages.
Straight Edgers / ALFers Arrested in Utah
AFTER TWO YEARS of investigative work into the inner workings of the Straight Edge gangs and Animal Liberation Front terrorist ties, the State of Utah filed charges against five individuals and recovered and rejailed fugitive Douglas Joshua Ellerman.
Officer Lee Perry of the Department of Public Safety, Criminal Investigations Bureau issued warrants for vandalism and release of mink from two different mink farms in South Jordan in June and July of 1996.
Booked into Salt Lake County Jail are Brandon Mitchener and Sean Albert Gautschy. Alex Slack, who is confined to a wheelchair and seriously ill, was also booked into the jail but released for medical reasons.
An additional warrant has been issued for Jacob Kennison who was involved in the Tandy Leather fire. Kennison is currently being held in federal prison in Phoenix, AZ where he was scheduled to be released to a half way house on June 24, 1998. Kennison will now be held in Phoenix until September, then delivered to Utah authorities. One other individual is still being sought.
Several weapons were confiscated from the suspects, including AR15 and MAK90 assault rifles.
An officer from the U.S. Marshal’s office helped Utah authorities with the arrests in case any evidence was found that might lead officers to federal fugitive Douglas Ellerman. Ellerman jumped bail in May, to avoid sentencing at a Federal Court on explosive and arson charges related to the March 1997 $1 million firebombing at the Salt Lake Fur Breeders Agricultural Coop. He turned himself in to the Federal Marshal on June 29 and is now also being held at the Salt Lake County Jail.
Many followers of “Straight Edge,” a movement which eschews alcohol, tobacco and sex, align themselves with animal rightist prohibitions against the use of animals for human benefit. Straight Edgers turned intolerant several years ago and have been known to use knives and razorblades to carve the “X” symbol of their movement into the backs of victims at music concerts.
