Fur Information Council of America and HSUS in face-off
A BILL TO MODIFY THE FUR PRODUCTS LABELING ACT is pitting the U.S. fur industry against the Humane Society of the U.S.
The bill, H.R. 2480, the Truth in Fur Labeling Act, would eliminate the small-value ($150) exemption in the law, but section 4 of the measure would also empower states, counties and municipalities to enact and enforce more restrictive labeling requirements.
In hearings on the bill, the Fur Information Council of America voiced its support for the elimination of the exemption, but objected to the state and local jurisdiction provision favored by HSUS.
FICA executive director Keith Kaplan testified before a Congressional sub-committee that the industry supports the transparency and dissemination of information underlying the law. At the same time, he voiced the trade’s opposition to giving states, counties or towns the right to adopt or enforce more restrictive labeling requirements than are currently provided by the existing federal law.
