Fur garment prices moving higher
HONG KONG/CHINESE MANUFACTURERS HAVE BEEN RAISING PRICES to reflect the advances at the skin level since the beginning of the year.
So far, wholesale levels have edged up another 10% to 20% over the quotations at the Hong Kong Fair in February, where the price lists already were 30% to 40% higher than last year’s comparable products. Now, labor shortages have developed, not only because of the expansion of their domestic market and the proliferation of new retail shops, manufacturers and other operations, but also competition from other industries.
With many of the large fur factories located in Guangdong and other eastern provinces where they compete for labor with technology, automotive and other major industries, they are forced to keep up with rapidly rising wage scales. Further exacerbating the problem is China’s strict one-child-per-family policy and the tendency of young people to shun factory work in favor of the professions.
