Fur Commission Praises FBI, ATF Action Against Animal Rights Violence
August 6, 1997
Fur Commission USA has praised the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) for combating violence committed by animal rights activists. Fur Commission officials encouraged the agencies to continue turning up the heat on animal rights criminals who attack animal enterprises including fur, meat, biomedical research and other facilities.
In letters to FBI director Louis Freeh and ATF Director John Magaw, Fur Commission Government Affairs Director Robert Buckler expressed the commission’s gratitude for the attention FBI and ATF agents are devoting to apprehending and prosecuting animal rights criminals. Buckler said that the agencies have “been prompt to respond when there is a serious animal rights incident,” and that they recognize “animal rights violence as a serious threat to public safety in the United States.”
Federal authorities recently indicted an animal rights activist, Douglas Joshua Ellerman, charged with bombing the Fur Breeders Agricultural Cooperative in Sandy, Utah. If convicted, Ellerman faces up to 155 years in prison, without parole. Buckler said other indictments in the Sandy crime and other animal rights incidents may result from continued investigation by the FBI, ATF and other enforcement agencies.
The letters also encouraged Director Freeh and Director Magaw to continue to increase FBI and ATF “involvement in the vital area of enforcement of federal anti-terrorism statutes.”
Fur Commission Chairman Skip Lea said that the Commission has established excellent working relations with the FBI, ATF and other enforcement agencies investigating animal rights criminal activities. “We are pleased with the level of on-going communication that has been established, and we look forward to federal and state indictments that will result in prison terms for animal rights criminals,” Lea said.
