Fur Apparel Wholesale Prices Seen Rising
WHOLESALE PRICES OF FUR APPAREL, WHICH HAVE BEEN ON THE RISE FOR MORE THAN A YEAR, can be expected to continue upward. Not just because skin prices may rise further – which at this point would only be speculation – but more likely due to steadily rising inflation rates in China, the main producer of fur garments for the U.S. and many other markets.
Although labor has become a minor factor in the price of a fur garment, this has been true only for the past three decades or so. Until South Korea – which preceded China as an inexpensive labor resource – was trained (by Americans) to manufacture furs, the labor factor was much greater, largely because of the involvement of fur unions. But Korea’s subsequent economic development had the effect of turning its manufacturers’ targets inward. That is when Hong Kong began to get more play from outsourcers in the U.S. and elsewhere.
