Fur Apparel Imports to US Continue to Rise
FUR APPAREL IMPORTS INTO THE UNITED STATES rose again in October, continuing this year’s steady uptrend following two solid years of monthly declines.
But, after five months of major double-digit increases, imports in the latest month edged up only 5%, indicating that the bulk of the orders placed at the fairs overseas and in Canada earlier this year have now been delivered.
For the year to date, the value of imports from all sources showed an increase of 22.3% over the same period last year. Considering this year’s substantially higher price structure, that would indicate that the number of units imported was virtually unchanged, confirming earlier observations that retailers were moving cautiously.
Moreover, October’s increase was entirely in furs other than mink, as was the case in the two previous months and indicating that retailers were shifting into less expensive items.
