Fur America Meets in Chicago
Fur America delegates from the trapping, farming, retailing and manufacturing sectors of the fur trade met in Chicago on July 15.
Funded by a global pelt assessment as distributed via grants from the International Fur Trade Federation in London, Fur America was established as a U.S.-focused fur industry umbrella organization. Through Fur America, the diverse people of the fur trade work together on issues of joint importance.
In order to avoid duplicating efforts, Fur America took on data collection, research and information dissemination for components of the fur trade. Recent collaborative efforts by the parties to Fur America resulted in the overwhelming victory over the Beverly Hills labeling initiative.
The July 15 Chicago meeting helped the group focus, set goals and share ideas for the coming year. Participating on behalf of the farmers were delegates Tom Gibson, Gincy Beck and Tom Mohoric.
“I feel Fur America is a vital force in the American fur industry,” stated Tom Gibson. “It is easy to get caught up in farming and forget the importance of the other segments of the fur trade.”
Gincy Beck agreed. “The delegates are so diverse, coming from country farms, wildlife management, international trading and boutiques. Our diversity gives us insight and strength. We complement one another and I look forward to another productive year of working together.”
