World Mink Production

World mink production varies according to projected demand. From a peak of 42 million pelts in 1988, output fell to 20 million in 1993. Since then, output has risen steadily, setting a new record of 57.6 million in 2007.

Leading producer for the last two years has been China. Data are unreliable, since most of China's pelts are used domestically and do not pass through international auction houses. However, the best estimate (made by Oslo Fur Auctions) is that it produced 20 million pelts in 2007, or 34.7% of world output.

All other producers also increased output in 2007, among them Denmark (14 million, up 4%), the Netherlands (4.3 million, up 16%), the USA (3 million, up 5%), Poland (2.8 million, up 27%), Canada (2.3 million, up 9%), Russia (2.2 million, up 5%), Finland (2.1 million, up 5%), the Baltic States (1.6 million, up 14%), Sweden (1.5 million, up 7%), Belarus (1 million, up 15%), and Norway (680,000, up 28%).
