Down, wool, leather, fur, silk. What do they have in common? All are fibers or fabrics in wide use in the daily lives of people everywhere. And ... they're all from members of the animal kingdom! Animals & Our Clothing is a package of classroom materials for grades 4 to 6, designed to help children understand about animal fibers, the species that produce them, and the contributions they make to our lives. Materials integrate easily into language arts, social studies, geography, and math.

Objectives:

  • To build general awareness of animal-human interdependence, and respect for the contributions animals make to human life.
  • To help students understand that clothing and many other products they value come from animals.
  • To build recognition of those species that provide wool, leather, down, silk and fur.
  • To emphasize the ethics of respect for animals, and the need for providing responsible care to animals.

To download Animals & Our Clothing it is necessary to have the program Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. It can be obtained free by clicking here. Click on the links to the materials you require and they will appear on screen in portable document format (PDF). You can then save them to your hard disk for future use, or print out directly. Although the materials are in color to make them more attractive, no material requires printing in color in order for it to be used.

If you experience any problems downloading, please contact furfarmers@aol.com.
