Mink Researcher Dr. John Gorham Honored by American Veterinary Epidemiological Society
Adapted from Fur Animal Research, Feb. 2002.
DR. JOHN GORHAM, Professor of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology at Washington State University, has been given the Gold-Headed Cane award by the American Veterinary Epidemiological Society, in recognition of his outstanding investigations in animal disease research for more than five decades. He has made landmark contributions in the study of mink, fox, dog, horse, sheep and goat diseases.
Dr. Gorham has authored or coauthored over 600 publications, and received many awards. Of all his honors, he is most appreciative of those received from mink farmers.
These include the Award of Excellence for his work on Aleutian Disease from the Olympic Fur Breeder Association, the Mink Farmers Hall of Fame from the Minnesota Fur Breeders, and awards from the Mink Farmers Research Foundation and the Canadian Fur Breeders Association.
Dr. Gorham and the late G.R. Hartsough were the first to describe Aleutian Disease. Dr. Gorham and his coworkers at Washington State University have made contributions for the control of mink diseases including the iodine agglutination test for Aleutian Disease, first multivalent botulism toxoid, first use of live distemper vaccine, first study on the blocking effect of distemper and mink virus enteritis maternal antibody, the “spray” vaccine for distemper, first vaccine for the prevention of pseudomonas infection, the genetic basis of hydrocephalus and fragile skin, first report of a corona virus as the cause of three-day disease, and the first research that showed the genetic susceptibility of Aleutian mink to a variety of virus and bacterial diseases.
Dr. Gorham said none of the research that he and his coworkers have accomplished would have been possible without the support of the Mink Farmers Research Foundation, a committee of FCUSA.
At the age of 78, he still goes to work every day.
