Danish mink crop at peak
THIS YEAR’S MINK PRODUCTION ON DANISH FARMS is projected to equal last year’s which, at 14.5 million, represented a record for the world’s largest mink producer.
More significant is the proportion of ‘velvet’, or short-napped, skins which Danish ranchers have been developing at a rapid rate. These more closely resemble mink produced in the U.S. and Canada (from which their original breeding stock evolved) and have narrowed the traditional price gap between Danish and North American mink.
Danish production of velvets has grown from 35% of their 2008 crop to 47% last year and this year is expected to constitute the majority at between 60% and 70%. The expansion has been largely through continued in-breeding of the velvets, but also through the continued introduction of fresh breeding stock acquired from leading North American farms – a sore point among other ranchers who view such sales as the near-equivalent of giving aid and comfort to the enemy.
