China fur retail prospects seen bright

ALTHOUGH THE RETAIL FUR SEASON IN CHINA has yet to get into full swing, the early reports are that it is off to a good start. Considering that Beijing and other areas of northern China were still experiencing mild temperatures, the early interest was described as encouraging. The Chinese trade has been anticipating another strong season despite the more conservative approaches elsewhere. Not only has the country’s economy been showing rapid recovery from last year’s financial meltdown, but this year’s lower price structure is expected to be more appealing to a wider segment of its huge population.

There are no official figures as to the size of China’s domestic fur business, but trade veterans place it at between $3.5 and $4 billion. Similarly, Russia’s annual volume has been estimated at about $2.5 billion. According to the International Fur Trade Federation, the world’s retail fur sales last year were about $13 billion.
