US Fur Apparel Imports Increased in 2010
IMPORTS OF FUR APPAREL INTO THE U.S. INCREASED by almost 20% in 2010 following five years of steady decline, but the rise was virtually entirely a reflection of higher prices.
According to the latest Commerce Dept. tallies, imports from all sources last year amounted to $121.7 million, up from the previous year’s total of $101.6 million. In the same period, however, wholesale prices of fur garments advanced as much as 30% or more. The mink portion amounted to $56.6 million, an increase of 2.7%, but the number of mink items imported, 79,834, was actually down slightly from the previous year. Imports of other furs rose 40% to $65.1 million. That consisted of 1.1 million articles, almost double those of the year before.
The official figures appear to confirm reports during the year that retailers were reacting to the higher prices by shifting emphasis to items that fit into their most popular price points.
